My restaurant recommendations.

So I thought it was about time I gave some food recommendations! Below are some of my favourite restaurants so far, bearing in mind that these are mostly in Tokyo. I'll break it down into categories for different kinds of foods and add in some izakayas too.

Sushi:
1) Sushi zan mai (Ueno, Tokyo) The fish used at sushi zan mae comes from the world-famous Tsukiji fish market, so is guaranteed to be fresh!
2) Sushi go round (Ueno, Tokyo) This is one of the famous kaiten or conveyor belt sushi restaurants. Lots of fun to watch the sushi come to you on a train.
3) Moriichi (Kameido, Tokyo) Another conveyor belt style sushi restaurant.
I really need to branch out and try some new sushi restaurants lol. Going to head to Tskukiji fish market on Friday, where they have some of the best sushi, so I'm looking forward to that!

Ramen:
1) Ippudo. A chain ramen shop in Tokyo, not sure if it's in other places in Japan or not.
2) Ichiran (Literally anywhere in Japan, it's one of the biggest chains of ramen shops)
3) Madai Ramen Mengyo. A fish broth based ramen shop in Kinshicho, Tokyo. The ramen here comes with smoked ham on top, slightly different to most other ramen shops where they serve it with pork.
4) Afuri. There are a few Afuri restaurants around Tokyo, but I went to the one in Harajuku. The broth was a lot thinner than traditional tonkotsu ramen, which has a thicker broth. It was a nice change, and also had a citrus flavour to it. Would highly recommend!

Shabu-shabu. Shabu shabu is a style of cooking where you choose your own meat and vegetables to cook in a hotpot. You can also choose noodles to cook in the hotpot or order a side dish of rice. Shabu shabu restaurants are often all you can eat, which is amazing!
1) Onyasai in Shibuya, Tokyo. This one had an all you can drink option too, which is dangerous, but the amount of food you eat absorbs the alcohol, right? So they say...
2) Nabezo in Asakusa, Tokyo. This one includes dessert, need I say more?

Izakayas
1) Kushi Katsu. Deep fried skewers of meat and vegetables. So good! There are vegetables involved, so it's healthy... At least that's what I told myself when I ordered dessert (deep fried bananas and cookies and cream...)
2) Torikizoku. Yakitori, or chicken skewers, are the specialty here, and the also do these great stuffed peppers that I love! Cheap drinks too.
3) Chiba Chan -The most insane amount of fried chicken I've ever seen in my life.

Yakiniku (Cook your own meat)
1)Anrakutei in Funabashi, Chiba
2) Jiromaru. I went to the one in Yokohama, but there is also one in Shinjuku, Tokyo.  So good, you can try beef tongue, which is surprisingly tender.

Each prefecture in Japan has it's own unique or famous dishes. One thing I would recommend in Nagano is soba (buckwheat noodles) with tempura vegetables. So good! In Kanagawa prefecture the famous food is shirasu (or whitebait). Coming from New Zealand, I'm used to whitebait patties (whitebait mixed with egg and fried), but in Japan they serve it with rice.
So those are some of my recommendations for food, mostly here in Tokyo, but some foods you should try in other prefectures too! I'm busy working a lot of overtime this month, so haven't really done much exploring, but in August we will have time off for Obon, which is kind of like Golden Week, with a lot of public holidays crammed together.  I've booked accommodation in Kanazawa with 2 friends, and it looks like there's heaps to do there, so that's exciting!
Hope you enjoyed reading all about some of the food here, and will post again soon.
From Japan, with love,
Hannah.
