Top 10 Western restaurant recommendations.
Hello again from Tokyo! I've been busy working a bit of overtime, and there have been a few birthday celebrations amongst coworkers and zumba friends lately, so I've been socialising a bit recently. My birthday is also just around the corner, and it's time to reveal where I'm going and what I'm doing for my special day. I'm going to...Universal Studios Japan in Osaka! I'm catching the night bus on Wednesday night after work to Kyoto, arriving at around 6.35am Thursday morning. I'll be meeting friends there and then heading to Universal from their place as Osaka and Kyoto are pretty close. I'll catch the train back to Tokyo on Friday morning to be back in time for work at 5.30pm. My birthday isn't till Sunday, but with the way my days off are, this was the best way to do it. It's going to be busy, but I'm so excited! I'm a massive Harry Potter fan, so USJ has been on my list since I arrived in Japan. I'll be buying all the souvenirs, and drinking all the butterbeer! There will be a blog post to come about that in the very near future.
So last year, I wrote a restaurant recommendations blog about some of my favourite Japanese restaurants at that point in time. Today, I wanted to do a different kind of restaurant recommendations post, talking about my favourite places to find those western foods you can't help but crave every now and again. As great as the Japanese food is, sometimes you want something different. So without further ado, let's get into it.
Here's a list of places you can go to get your fix of western food and satisfy your cravings!
1) Pizza Slice. American style pizza! Pizzas in Japan are usually not the best, often small with strange toppings (corn and potatoes, I'm looking at you...). However, if you want big slices without the crazy, weird toppings, then Pizza Slice is your place!
2) Freshness Burger. A good burger can be hard to find here. I miss a good old Fergburger or Devil Burger, but Freshness Burger comes close.
3) Crossroad Bakery. I just discovered this place last week and man oh man do they have some delicious stuff. Their bread bowls (with different soups eg clam chowder) are to die for, and they're made with sourdough which is very difficult to find here. The bread in Japan is definitely subpar, and I'd do anything for a loaf of Freyas or Vogels, but Crossroad is one place that gets it right.
4) Suke6 Diner. This place has pavlova. Enough said. But seriously, the burger I had here was delish, and I couldn't believe that I'd found pavlova in Japan. They have a wide range of foods from burgers to pancakes and a traditional big breakfast with all the trimmings. It's also really nicely designed and has a relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommend!
5) Tex Mex Factory. All you can eat tacos. Need I say more? You can make your own tacos, and there are a variety of fillings to choose from, including beef, pork, chicken and beans. The all you can eat deal is only from 11-3pm though, so make sure you come during those hours. I did have nachos here once during dinner hours, but it wasn't amazing, so I'd just come here for the tacos to be completely honest.
6) Mojo Coffee. Good coffee with a kiwi touch. They have ANZAC biscuits, banana bread and more! The baking is tasty, and there are three Mojo cafes scattered around the city.
7) AllPress Cafe. This one is very similar to Mojo, with kiwi style baking and coffee. This cafe is located in an area called Kiyosumi Shirakawa, which has a lot of good cafes to try out, but I like this one the best because of the friendly staff here.
8) Cookie Time. If you're a New Zealander, then you'll appreciate this one. I honestly died when I found this here. They sell the original cookies as well as freak shakes with cookie dough, whipped cream and toppings of your choice, including m and ms, flakes and more. Calorie overload, but treat yo'self am I right? A taste of home!!
9) Sarabeths. For a good brunch, this is the place to come. They have a delicious eggs benedict, fluffy pancakes and omelettes to satisfy every craving.
10) TGIFridays. This is one we don't have in New Zealand! There is a variety of food on the menu here, from burgers to steaks and chicken dishes. They also have a happy hour, and the lunch deal is pretty reasonable
There you have it! My top 10 places to check out if you find yourself getting sick of the endless rice and noodles on offer here in Japan. Western food does tend to be a little pricier, but every now and again it's nice to treat yourself and have something that reminds you of home.
Hope you enjoyed this post, and I'll be back again soon with another life in Japan update, including a review of Universal Studios Japan!
